Rhyming life-partners & philanthropists Gary & Mary West have provided $11.8 million to the University of California, San Diego to create a senior emergency care unit at the future Jacobs Medical Center.

Their donation came in two parts. One donation including a $6.3 million capital grant from the Gary & Mary West Foundation, with the second donation coming in at $5.5 million in planned research funding from the West Health Institute. This research funding will go into conducting a shared, multiyear research for developing, evaluating, and using new health care approaches for geriatric patients. The combined research will help support UC San Diego Health fulfill its vision to offer a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to caring for the truly vulnerable members of our community. A society can be measured by how much revenue it accrues over a year, but the real test of a society's success is how it treats those members who cannot easily fend for themselves. Gary & Mary's support will spur novel care, research and teaching at UC San Diego, the area's only academic health institution. UC San Diego is also planning to add 8,500 square feet of dedicated space for the senior emergency care unit which will serve as a clinical training and research gold and become a site for education of medicine to continue to grow and attract the very best to provide the utmost care and medicine.
