Carmen Policy Could Be Key For Raiders, Chargers
The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders have been vying for a football stadium in Carson, California. While the Los Angeles area might seem like a natural choice for an NFL stadium, the proposed project will require $1.7 billion to complete.
Where will this money come from? The Chargers and Raiders hope to find part of that answer in Carmen Policy, who served as president of both the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers. Although Policy stepped back from the league in 2004, he re-enters the scene with experience, understanding about the NFL, and respect from other owners with whom he previously worked.
The Raiders and Chargers chose Policy because he could offer a single, strong voice to their joint pursuit of a Carson stadium. While both teams are independently trying to strike their stadium contracts in their current cities, they hope to join together to establish their shared stadium 13 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
Policy could also be the key in helping them maintain interest in their project even with the rival stadium proposed by the St. Louis Rams. The Rams hope to move to a new stadium in Inglewood. In February, the Inglewood City Council approved construction on this stadium and it will begin in December with or without an NFL team to play in it.
For any team to relocate, 24 of the 32 league owners need to approve. Policy should help both the Chargers and the Raiders secure this approval.
