Kimpton suddenly scales back in its hometown.

Kimpton Hotels has established a name for itself in the boutique hotel market, but it seems to be retracting some of the claim it has staked in this sector. These changes come after Kimpton was recently acquired by InterContinental Hotels for $430 million. InterContinental is a massive lodgings organization, boasting nearly 5,000 hotels with 724,000 rooms across the globe. They seem to be none too anxious to grow that number, though. Under their direction, Kimpton just dropped four of its six properties in its hometown of San Francisco. This decreases Kimpton's rooms in the city to 549, especially surprising when compared against the 2,785 rooms they claimed in San Francisco in 2001. This change is not only startling because of the pull-back in Kimpton's native city; it also came incredibly quickly. Between mid-July and the end of that month, these four properties were dropped without any forewarning. Management was apparently transferred to other boutique hotel operators. For those who already had reservations at these Kimpton properties, the change has been especially jarring. People have arrived at these properties to discover they're under different management. For those whose reservations are further out, the only notification was an email informing them that if their reservation falls later than August, it would not be honored in Kimpton's loyalty program. Kimpton's pull-back from San Francisco creates a void that savvy hotel owners should be looking to fill.
