The Tech that Young Travelers Can't Leave Home Without

Data from the Millennial and Gen Z Summer Travel Tech -survey.

It's no secret that millennials and their younger counterparts are more tech reliant than any of the generations preceding them. This is why it's not surprising that young travelers insist on remaining plugged in and connected even as they traverse the globe. Domio, a tech-focused hospitality company, decided to examine the tech that millennials and Gen Z cannot leave home without. Here are some of the highlights from Domio's Millennial and Gen Z Summer Travel Tech -survey.

Video Streaming - Nearly 70% of young travelers reported that Netflix was the digital streaming service they were most interested in using via guestroom Smart TVs. This data bodes well for the video streaming platform, as it attempts to make strides in the hospitality industry. Marriott Hotels and Netflix recently joined together to offer Marriott guests the ability to subscribe to Netflix or sign into their existing accounts by using the Netflix app on guestroom televisions. Netflix has also signed on with Dish's Evolve hospitality and Enseo to offer similar video streaming services to properties across the world.

Smart Speakers - When it comes to the type of smart speakers young travelers want to see in their guestrooms, Amazon topped the list with 50% choosing the Amazon Echo, 35% selecting the Google Home, and 15% choosing the Apple Homepod. Understanding this trend, Amazon recently unveiled Alexa for Hospitality. This new experience, offered to hoteliers via invite, brings the convenience of Alexa to hotels, vacation rentals, and other hospitality locations.

Apps/Social Media - When finding activities in their travel destinations, Google Maps was the app of choice for both millennials and Gen Z at 52%, while Yelp was second at 22%. For Gen Z, Snapchat was third, overtaking the millennial favorite, Instagram. This indicates the growing influence of Snapchat amongst the youngest travelers.

These are some of the types of tech that young travelers cannot leave home without.  Those in the hospitality business should consider ways to integrate this tech in their guest experiences to attract millennial and Gen Z travelers.  Looking to integrate new tech into your property?
