A recent survey conducted by the National Academy of Sciences found that most of the 1,020 American adults they contacted believed that their water supply was more than adequate and dependable.

Because of climate change and prolonged droughts in the western states, paying attention to water use in new construction or remodels helps reduce the overall demand for water, which is becoming a more precious commodity as the prolonged drought continues.

Low flow plumbing, particularly toilets, will help with water conservation efforts. Thirty percent of water used residentially is used for toilet flushing, something that the study participants were largely unaware of. Instead, most participants cited taking shorter showers as the best approach to water conservation at home. Design and engineering advances in low-flow toilets has improved performance and greatly cut water use.
