The Three Safest States In America The Three Safest States In America
Vermont Tops The List Whether you are thinking about moving or just dreaming of your next weekend getaway, knowing the safest states can bring you peace of mind as you plan to head towards them. To determine which states are the safest, 24/7 Wall St. examined violent crime rates from the 2013 Uniform Crime Report released by the FBI. Here is their list of the top three least dangerous states in the country.
  1. Vermont: The nation's second least populous state tops the list of the safest with just 115 violent crimes per 100,000 people in 2013. With just ten murders in the whole year, a poverty rate of 12.3 percent, and high school graduate percentage of 91.5 percent, this state experienced a notable lack of crime.
  2. Maine: With just 121.6 violent crimes per 100,000 people and 69 aggravated assaults per 100,000 people, Maine secured its place as the second safest state. Fortunately for its residents that depend heavily on their vehicles to navigate its largely rural landscape, it also reports less than 70 motor vehicle thefts per 100,000 residents.
  3. Virginia: The states' financial stability contributes to the low crime rate, as the typical Virginia household earns $62,666. With 187.9 violent crimes per 100,000 people, Virginia comes in third among the safest states. The state's high murder rate (319 in 2013, the 19th highest in the country) is cancelled by just 322 burglaries per 100,000 residents and the 9th lowest poverty rate in the United States (11.7 percent).
